L.A. Pride is a true sports enthusiast. A former youth, and division II assistant basketball coach, who studied the martial arts, he enjoys and follows all sports, even hockey. His quick wit and insight brings a fresh view to the world of sports. You may not always agree with him, but you will enjoy his highly opinionated thoughts.
Is it me…
Or did we at least get the number of games correct? We picked the Miami Heat in six games, it was the Dallas Mavericks, however, who needed only six games to win the NBA championship. Congrats to Dirk Nowitzki, the series MVP, who was outstanding, and the rest of the Mavericks.

Dallas was the better team and showed it throughout the series. They responded to every adjustment made by Miami. The Dallas players accepted their roles and put forth maximum effort in those roles. They played a team sport as a team and won the ultimate prize, a ring. (I am assuming Cuban was joking about not getting the Mavericks rings. He feels that championship rings are passé and they deserve better. Maybe championship crowns? In the old days when you conquered a city you would take the King’s crown and present it to your King. Watch out King James, you may lose your Kangol.)

I won’t pretend to be a psychologist, but Miami had real problems in the fourth quarter, especially LeBron. It was as if they “checked” out at the end of several games. While Dallas was just the opposite, becoming mentally tougher and focused in the fourth quarter.

LeBron tweeted that it was God’s decision, keeping him from winning this year. I wasn’t aware that God was a Maverick’s fan. LeBron stand up and take responsibility for the loss, you played poorly!!!! It was a bad day, all around for LeBron, he wanted to buy a bottle of water from the vending machine, but didn’t have a “fourth quarter”.
Is it me…
Or is Mike Tyson becoming a likable person? Mike Tyson was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. For those of us who follow boxing, we thought for sure Tyson would be indicted way before an induction. Tyson was very humble in accepting the honor and seemed genuinely different as a person. The once proclaimed “baddest man on the planet” had difficulty speaking due to emotion. Sylvester Stallone was also inducted for his “Rocky” movie series.

Is it me…
Or is Mayweather getting ready to fight Pacquiao? Floyd Mayweather has agreed to fight Victor Ortiz whose style would help Mayweather prepare for Pacquiao. Ortiz and Pacquiao are both fast, high-volume punchers who tend to press the action. They are also southpaws, and Mayweather — who will be ending a 16-month layoff when he steps into the ring Sept. 17 — has rarely fought left-handed opponents during his undefeated career. Mayweather has had problems with southpaws, e.g. Zab Judah, who was doing well against Floyd until he (Judah) faded.

Ortiz is young, strong, and aggressive. Mayweather needs to be careful, tune-ups can end up getting you tuned-out!
Is it me…
Or is Baseball still just plodding along? Baseball takes forever to get interesting. Hopefully after the all-star break we will have a few interesting story lines. If not we can always watch the grass grow in the outfield, or watch some idiot fan drop his daughter trying to catch a baseball.

Is it me…
Or is there an NFL? No news is _______news. You fill in the blank. The Millionaires and Billionaires are really playing hardball. They keep bumping heads over the $9,000,000,000 pot, they are going to have to be checked for concussions. Trust me on this, when and if they reach an agreement, it’s the fan and the little guy who will pay for it. NFL employees have had their salaries trimmed by 12 percent since April, and seven teams have instituted pay cuts or furloughs of workers outside the huddle since the owners’ lockout of players began March 12.

Is it me…
Or is it good to see the Williams sisters playing tennis again? The Williams sisters will be playing at the Eastbourne International Tournament. Eastbourne, a warm-up for Wimbledon, will mark their return to the circuit. Serena has been away for nearly a year and Venus for four months. Their absence was due to injuries. Like it or not, there is not much interest in women’s tennis without the Williams. Welcome back, and good luck ladies.

Is it me…
Or are they still playing Hockey? The NHL has managed to find a way to drag out their season. Didn’t they start their season before the NBA? The Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins are still playing. The series is tied 3-3, with the final game of the season tonight in Vancouver, just in time to melt the ice and go swimming. Road team finally wins one and the Bruins take Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Or will the NBA be a lot less entertaining? Shaquille O’Neal has officially retired from professional basketball. Shaq, who is 39 , played for 19 seasons. He won four championships and scored 28, 596 points, in addition to 13, 099 rebounds. He will be remembered as one of the all time greatest centers in the league, alongside Russell, Chamberlain, and Kareem.

Shaq, unlike the aforementioned centers, was outgoing and friendly throughout his career. He was readily accessible to the press and enjoyed meeting and greeting people. He played hard and took basketball, and not himself , seriously. He always remembered it was a game. Shaq was generous to a fault, establishing several private and public charities to assist those in need. He was an entertainer who enjoyed putting on a good show on and off the court. The league has lost one of its biggest stars. Enjoy your retirement Shaq.

Is it me…
Or is Plaxico Burress, the former New York Giants wide receiver, having a streak of bad luck? Granted, getting out of jail is a good thing, but with the NFL lockout in place, he is out of work, with no apparent prospects. He left the lockup for the lockout.

Burress served twenty months for illegally carrying and firing a gun in New York City. (He dropped the gun and it discharged shooting himself in the thigh and narrowly missing a security guard in the club Burress was attending.) He was sentenced to two years, after pleading guilty to the charges.
At Oneida Correctional Facility, he had some brushes with prison discipline, too.
At various points, prison officers said he lied to get to use the phone at a time when calls weren’t usually allowed, gave another inmate a pair of sneakers (considered an “unauthorized exchange”) and had three dozen cassette tapes and an extra, state-issued pillow in a “filthy” cell strewn with bags of food, dirty clothes, books and mail, prison records obtained by the AP show. The infractions – considered minor – cost him recreation, phone and other privileges at times, and he was told to clean up his room.
Apparently, he needed a time out in prison as well.
Burress a gifted wide receiver, will need to mature if he is going to make it all the way back.

Is it me…
Or did the Heat respond? After handily winning game one in the NBA finals , the Miami Heat blew a fifteen-point lead in game two and lost. Dirk Nowitzki led the comeback, by the Mavericks, scoring the game winning field goal, and taking home court away from the Heat. Game three was a nip and tuck battle at the end featuring a dual between two superstars, Dirk and Dwayne, (where were you King James). Chris Bosh who had been invisible up to this point hit the go-ahead field goal for the Heat. Dirk missed a shot at the end, sealing the Mavericks fate. The series stands at 2-1, Heat.

The Heat who were “punched in the face” game two, sniffed and blinked , and came out to play game three. (If you are in a fight and you hit the other person in the face, and all he does is sniff and blink, then you better be ready to fight hard, because he is.) The Heat have taken home court back and still look good in six to me. Game four started as we went to press so we do not have the results.

Is it me…
Or has the NBA lived up to its commitment to the WNBA? The WNBA, which started in 1996, has managed to survive all of these years. Congrats to the league, the NBA for their support, and the many great athletes who have played in this league throughout the years. The NBA has stood by the league, without any outside pressure, i.e. Title IX, and let it grow and prosper. Sure there have been some bumps, and there will continue to be some, but women’s sport is a viable part of our culture and needs to be showcased.
And for you chauvinists out there, try ballin’ with a WNBA player on the court-you can’t. Go Essence!
Is it me …
Or should Mark Jackson have waited to see what happens with the Knicks? The Knicks, as usual, have made a mess of things. Letting Donnie Walsh go is a big mistake. Walsh was able to bring in good players and reduce the salary cap to the point where the Knicks had money to spend on players. Knick ownership is lost at sea without a paddle.

Now that Donnie Walsh has been “retired”, what happens with Coach Mike D. of the Knicks? I am sure the new guy will want to have his own coach in place, which leads me to believe Coach D’Antoni is out. Mark Jackson played in New York, and is from the area. He would have certainly been a serious candidate if D’Antoni were let go. I can only assume that Jackson decided to take the first train running and therefore quickly accepted the Golden State Warriors job. Good Luck Mark!
Is it me…
Or is pretending something that did happen, didn’t happen, silly? The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) has stripped USC of the 2004 national collegiate football title, leaving that season without a champion. The NCAA ruled star tailback Reggie Bush received improper extra benefits during those seasons and was ineligible when he played.

This is like in court when the judge asks the jury to disregard something they just heard; how do you “un-hear” a ringing bell? USC won the championship on the field; did they have a little extra help, yes. That’s life in major college sports.

Or did JR Hilldebrand miss a turn? After successfully negotiating 799 turns at the Indy 500 auto race, rookie Indy driver, Hilldebrand, crashed into the wall on turn number 800, the final turn, while leading the race. Dan Wheldon who never led in the race until the last 1000 feet went on to win the Indy 500. Speed kills!

Or do soccer players really know how to celebrate a score? Barcelona (Spain) defeated Man United (England) to win the Champions League final, by a score of 3-1. Each goal that was scored was celebrated to the fullest. I know scoring in soccer is a difficult “feet”. It is nice to see an athlete lose himself and just display raw emotions. Soccer fans are another story; they can be a bit over the top with their enthusiasm. Barcelona police arrested 80 people and at least 18 others were hospitalized during a victory celebration in Barcelona.

An unnamed 17-year-old woman died accidentally when she slipped and fell into a deep hole beside a fountain while celebrating the win in the northwestern town of Santa Comba, local newspaper La Voz de Galicia reported. Soccer fans had poured shampoo into the fountain to create bubbles, which concealed an uncovered manhole that led to the fountain’s pump, the paper said.
Is it me…
Or do they not pay baseball catchers enough? San Francisco Giants catcher, Buster Posey, will miss the rest of the season after undergoing ankle surgery to repair ligament damage sustained in a collision at home plate.(He fractured his leg also, but that was left to heal naturally.) I know catchers have “body armor” on when catching, and it is their decision to block home plate, but the runner usually has a full head of steam, a 90 foot runway, and the choice to run over the catcher or slide, spikes first. The catcher has to catch and hold onto the ball; in addition to watching the runner charge at him …It is like coming to a railroad crossing, nothing good can come from stopping on the tracks.

Is it me…
Or did Jim Tressel see the handwriting on the wall? Jim Tressel resigned as the head football coach at Ohio State University. The NCAA was investigating Tressel and the University for alleged violations involving Ohio State players and a local tattoo parlor. Players were accused of receiving cash and free tattoos in exchange for game memorabilia. Tressel denied having any knowledge of this taking place. However, mounting evidence showed that he had been informed of the alleged violations and chose to look the other way. Pressure from the public and media, on Tressel and the University, forced his resignation. His record at Ohio State was 106-22, 9-1 against arch rival Michigan and 6-4 in bowl games.
Tressel , the author of two books on faith and integrity, remains a scapegoat to his followers and a hypocrite to others.

Is it me…
Or is it cool that one of two great NBA players will soon receive a championship ring? Either Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks or LeBron James of the Miami Heat will win an NBA championship shortly. By winning the championship he (?) will leave the club of great players who have never won a ring. The club’s chartered members are Elgin Baylor, Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Patrick Ewing and Bernard King. (In fairness to Baylor, he retired mid-season , allowing the Lakers to start and play Jim McMillian, who contributed greatly to the Lakers Championship drive in 1972. Baylor should get a ring for his sacrifice and the fact that he is one of my favorite players.)
Dallas defeated OKC and won the Western Conference , while Miami dominated Chicago and won the East. It will be a very competitive series, with Miami winning in six. I like the Heat because they are playing well and have a lot of weapons. Dallas is a bit suspect defensively, and that will prove costly against the Heat ,who are healthy and firing on all cylinders. I know Dallas did very well against the Heat during the regular season, but so did Boston and Chicago, and we know how that turned out. Game one was last night(we went to press too early to publish the results).
Right now, before the series start, MVP, Dirk or LeBron, who you got?

Or did Bernard Hopkins miss a Math class or two? Hopkins, age 46, became the oldest man to win a Boxing championship, this weekend in Montreal, by defeating light heavyweight champ Jean Pascal. Hopkins said in a post fight interview that he plans to hold the title five or six years, until he is 50. Luckily for us, Hopkins is a fighter and not an educator. Hopkins, a native of Philadelphia, had threatened to wear a Philadelphia Flyers (Hockey) jersey into the ring. (Montreal is Canadians’ territory in the National Hockey League.) Apparently he thought better of that, although one member of his corner did wear a Flyers’ jersey. In the old days he would have had to fight his way into the ring wearing another team’s jersey.

Roy Jones, Jr. was knocked out in the tenth and final round of his cruiser weight fight in Moscow. Jones who was the underdog, had managed to survive by showboating and counterpunching throughout the fight. Roy claims he is not sure about his future and wants to think about things. What is there to think about Roy? You have gotten old and slow, it happens to everyone. What you need to think about is what you are going to do in retirement. Please don’t continue boxing and risk serious injury!!!!!

Is it me…
Or do we need to wish “The Golden Boy” all the best? Oscar De La Hoya, “The Golden Boy”, has checked himself into a California rehabilitation center for substance abuse. Oscar, one of boxing’s all time greats, won 10 titles in six weight classes, and owns a career record of 39-6. We wish you a healthy and speedy Oscar. Get well soon.

Is it me…
Or did the Miami Heat step up their game? Last week, I predicted the Chicago Bulls would win the eastern conference playoffs in six, and I trashed Miami’s bench. I guess I ticked off the Heat, who are up 2-1 in the series. (We went to press before last night’s results.) The Heat have won two straight, going into last night’s game, and are on “fire”. Game two in Chicago was noted for excellent bench production from Haslem and Miller of the Heat, while game 3 in Miami , was the Chris Bosh show. Also note that in both games won by Miami, they played suffocating defense and frustrated the Bulls. We still like the Bulls, but it may take seven.

The Dallas Mavericks lead the OKC Thunder 3-1 after a thrilling fourth quarter comeback Monday night. Down 15 points late in the fourth, Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd led a furious charge to force the game in to overtime, where they put it away and crushed the Thunder. The Mavericks, who never led in regulation time, now seem destine to win the Western Conference finals. Much was made of Jason Kidd’s age and ability to keep up with the younger Thunder players, Durant and Westbrook; however Jason has more than held his own with Durant and has outplayed Westbrook. Youth is wasted on the young!

Is it me…
Or does the British Premier Soccer League take winning seriously? The Premier Soccer dropped three teams to the minor league for their poor performance this season. The league will allow the top three minor league teams to join the Premier League. Aside from the damage this does to a club’s reputation, it will also cost the demoted clubs $65 million dollars in lost television revenue.

Just imagine if this was the policy in the United States. The NBA could drop Minnesota, Cleveland, and Toronto and bring up Reno, Rio Grande Valley, and Iowa from the D-league. The NFL could boot out Carolina, Denver, and Cincinnati, and bring up Auburn, Oregon, and TCU from the college ranks. This has potential; you would have two playoff races going on at the same time; one for the championship and one to stay in the majors. We could call the fight to stay in the league, “The Race to Save Face”.
Is it me…
Or is it with a heavy heart we note the passing of the “Macho Man”? Randy Savage, “Macho Man”, was killed in a car crash Friday near his Florida home. “Macho Man” a professional wrestler to the max was famous for his abuse of Miss Elizabeth, his real-life wife and manager, and his Slim Jim commercials. “Macho Man” was 58. Savage who played minor league baseball had several disagreements with the WWE, which has resulted in their refusal to induct him in the WWE Hall of Fame. We can only hope that his passing will result in a softening of their position and allow this great wrestler into the Hall.

Or did Scottie Pippen show up at Yankee Stadium this weekend? In May of 1994, a playoff game versus the Knicks, Scottie Pippen refused to go into a game because Coach Jackson designed a last second play for another player. (Jordan was playing professional baseball and Pippen assumed he was the man.) Fortunately, for the Bulls, Kukoc hit the last second shot and the Bulls won. This weekend Jorge Posada, the Yankees designated hitter, who is batting below .200, well below, pulled himself from the Yankee lineup after learning he had been dropped in the Yankee batting order to the ninth spot. (Batting ninth is usually reserved for the weakest hitter in your lineup, which in this case is Jorge.)

Derek Jeter, Posada’s longtime teammate and friend, supported Posada’s action. Jeter said, that as captain if he felt Posada had done something wrong he would have told him.
I am not sure why Derek didn’t speak up. But Posada quit on the team and even asked to leave the Yankees. This was not wrong Derek? Are you worried that you may be next, given your poor performance so far this season, or are you still angry with management for leaking information regarding your contract negotiations?

Jorge has since apologized for his actions, but the damage is done. Jorge wake up and look at the stats, and baseball has a zillion, you are at the bottom of the league when it comes to batting average for starting players. You are not getting the job done. The manager, Girardi, has been carrying you and allowing you the privilege of playing. Yes it is a privilege! How many baseball players would give anything to bat ninth for the New York Yankees?
Is it me…
Or do aging athletes stay too long? It always amazes me that athletes are the last to see their skills fade. How often do we see an athlete embarrass himself by trying to play that “one” extra season. Very few have the good sense to leave in a timely fashion. Michael Jordan could have left with the winning shot in an NBA championship game as his last NBA shot. He chose to come back and was a shell of himself.

Almost every great boxer (except Rocky Marciano) has fought one too many fights; and has suffered for it, either physically, Muhammad Ali, or with a loss on their record, Joe Louis, Mike Tyson, Ray Robinson. Great quarterbacks, Unitas, Namath, Montana, playing for new teams, well after their skills have eroded. Willie Mays trying to play center field for the Mets.

I imagine it is what made them great athletes in the first place that keeps them from seeing the truth, EGO. Great Egos never retire.
Is it me…
Or does the NBA have a couple of pretty good conference finals matchups? The Dallas Mavericks versus the OKC Thunder in the west and Chicago Bulls versus the Miami Heat in the east. The Mavericks and Thunder played game one last night (we went to press before the game ended). The Mavericks swept the Lakers and have been off for several days. The rust versus rest issue again. They are playing a very young team, the Thunder, so the rest can only help. The Thunder are coming off a grueling seven game series against Memphis, with one day off. But they are young, dumb and want some, so they will be ready to go. I will make a prediction after watching game one in this series.

Chicago and Miami had their first game Sunday. A fairly even game the first half. Chicago dominated the second half, with smothering TEAM defense and rebounding, and got the win. Deng, of the Bulls, with help from his teammates, did an excellent job on LeBron, holding him to under twenty points. Wade was also under twenty, and the victim of a monster dunk. It is going to be a long series for Miami unless they figure out the size issue. Chicago is long and athletic, which creates matchup problems, plus they have a bench (and the MVP D. Rose). Miami’s bench is just not productive. (Can you name a player coming off the bench for the Heat or their other two starters?) Chicago in Six!

Or did the NFL owners get a big victory Monday night? The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that it is okay to keep the lockout in place. A major win for the billionaires!!!! This same court will revisit the issue early June, bad news for the millionaires (players). (The Court will be hard pressed to reverse itself and open the camps, given its conservative nature.) The longer the lockout is in place, the better it is for the billionaires. The millionaires do not receive paychecks during the offseason, so they have not felt any pressure yet. They are missing the mandatory camps and sessions that they didn’t want to attend in the first place. However, if the lockout remains in place for a lengthy period and the millionaires start missing paychecks …hmm. Will we still see a united labor front?????

Or do all Boxers lie? Mosely claimed to have had the best training camp ever. He said he was in great shape and ready to go…NOT! Manny Pacquiao completely dominated the fight Saturday. It wasn’t a contest after the first round. Mosely appeared more interested in surviving, than fighting or trying to win. Pacquiao, who had problems with his legs, fought a subpar fight for him, and yet won easily. Mosely, who was legitimately knocked down, (Pacman slipped once and they called it a knockdown) seemed intimidated and appeared to age in the ring. Mosely was slower and lacked any zip in his punches. The hardest he hit Pacquiao was at the end of each round when they touched gloves. (Note to Mosely: there is nothing to gain by being a nice guy in the ring. Your acknowledgement at the end of each round was pretty wimpy. What were you doing, thanking him for a butt whipping?)

Shane, it may be time to hang up the gloves. Boxing is an unforgiving sport, leave now, a bit early rather than “tomorrow” a bit late.
Where are you Pretty Boy (Mayweather)?
Is it me…
Or does Tiger need a break? Tiger Woods, the former number one golfer in the world, and the unofficial greatest golfer of all time, has slipped in the current rankings to number 8. Tiger, who is wearing a protective boot, because of knee and achilles injuries, has not played competitive golf for several weeks and still manages to slide in the rankings. It was sad enough watching him play lately and sliding, but not to play and slip is insult to injury. The good news is that he is scheduled to play in a tournament this week. We’re hoping he does well. He was/is the face of golf.

Is it me…
Or did Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh Steelers, have a rough week? Not only has Rashard been universally blasted for his comments regarding 9/11 and the death of Bin Laden, he lost his endorsement deal with Champion. Champion dropped him from his newly negotiated four year deal stating that they no longer believed Mendenhall could represent their company.
There is an old proverb, which I will paraphrase, it is better to keep your mouth shut, and have people think you’re stupid, than it is to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Okay Rashard!

Is it me…
Or is the NBA beginning to worry about their finals? The three peat story line is gone, thanks to the Dallas Mavericks, who beat the defending champs, L A Lakers, in four games, A SWEEP. I had mentioned in an earlier column my concern, regarding the Lakers, but I thought they had gotten it together after beating the Hornets. Wrong! Not only did they get swept, they behaved like hoodlums in game four. There were two very cheap shots by Odom and Bynum, which deserves no further comment. (Hey guys you won last year like champs, have some class and step down like champs.) Dallas must now wait for the winner of Oklahoma City versus Memphis matchup which is tied at two, and brings me to my point. Neither of these two cities is a large television market. The western conference ratings will take a hit, and if Dallas is upset by either Memphis or OKC, there goes the finals rating. The East is okay in that it has several large markets still playing, Miami versus Boston (Boston is down three games to one) and Chicago versus Atlanta (tied at two, we went to press before the game ended).

The East has a couple of storylines they can pursue; the big three in Miami; MVP and resurgence in Chicago; the last hurrah for Boston; and upstart Atlanta making waves. The West has the rising new teams OKC and Memphis; or Dallas looking for redemption for past failures as possible storylines, but fans need to be excited about the matchups and there has to be an audience if the league expects to cash in, before their labor negotiations.

Is it me…
Or do the Knicks have no chance of getting Phil Jackson as their coach? Knick fans have started whispering about the possibility of Phil Jackson replacing Mike D’Antoni. Why would Jackson be interested? Sure, he played on their championship teams, and he admires Red Holzman, and the Knicks do have two stars, but can they compete for a title as constructed, a requirement for any team Phil takes over. They are not there yet. But what if CP3 (Chris Paul) becomes available? Hmmm, I see a New York State of Mind.
Is it me…
Or is the NFL extremely quiet of late? The Billionaires and Millionaires have run out of items to argue about. (There was a complaint about tampering. The billionaires were contacting the millionaires who are free agents. They are not supposed to have any contact with each other during the lockout. But the billionaires can’t be trusted, and tried to get a leg up on each other.)They will continue to mediate and salivate over their respective shares of the $9,000,000,000 pie.
