L.A. Pride is a true sports enthusiast. A former youth, and division II assistant basketball coach, who studied the martial arts, he enjoys and follows all sports, even hockey. His quick wit and insight brings a fresh view to the world of sports. You may not always agree with him, but you will enjoy his highly opinionated thoughts.

Or are they playing for the Stanley Cup somewhere? The L.A. Kings are playing the N.J. Devils for the NHL championship, but who knows it. The NHL has been nearly invisible on a fairly obscure cable channel. Once a week they
play on NBC, which does allow people to catch a game.
Fortunately, for the NHL, their finals (all the games) are on NBC and will offer some exposure.
But it may be too little or too late to capture the casual fan. NHL get yourself a network deal that provides real exposure during the season and the early round of the playoffs.

Or did Junior Dos Santo ‘rock’ Frank Mir in their UFC heavyweight bout? A state commissioner asked Mir where he was between rounds and Mir named the wrong casino. A pretty good sign that he was finished.
Dos Santos took Mir out at the three minute mark of the second round. Mir was staggered by multiple blows, including a big body shot, late in the first round, and he barely made it to the bell. After declaring he was at the Mandalay Bay instead of the MGM Grand Garden, Mir was allowed to keep fighting – but it didn’t last very long (second round).

Mir, who turned 33 on Thursday, has the most heavyweight victories in UFC history, but he couldn’t add one more to his total, thanks to Dos Santos.

Or is Derek Jeter a picture of consistency? With a single in the first inning against the A’s, Jeter, NY Yankees, collected career-hit No. 3,155, passing George Brett for 14th place on the all-time hits list. Jeter needs just 29 hits to catch Orioles great Cal Ripken Jr., who ranks 13th with 3,184.
Good job Derek.

Or did the N.Y. Knicks do the smart thing? The Knicks (NBA) signed “interim” coach Mike Woodson to a multi-year contract, removing the interim from his title. The terms of the contract were not disclosed, Coach Woodson, who took over during the season for D’Antonio, was generally given credit for doing a good job under some very stressful conditions. He went 18-6, in addition to winning a playoff game against the Heat. We wish Coach Woodson continued success.

As always with the Knicks there is good and bad news, the bad news is J.R. Smith was arrested in Miami for driving without a valid license. And we thought he only drove recklessly on the basketball court.

Or do we want to look at the NBA playoffs?
Western Conference
Oklahoma City Thunder vs. San Antonio Spurs*
The Spurs won game 1 and lead the series going into last nights’ game, 1-0. The Spurs are clicking on all cylinders. The Thunder looked confused and tried to force feed Durant in isolation plays, didn’t work. The Thunder blew a nine point lead and lost the game.
Time will tell if the “old” Spurs can outpace the youngsters.
Eastern Conference
Boston Celtics vs., Miami Heat
The Heat leads the series 1-0 after, another spectacular game by LeBron James.
The Celtics have some real issues in this series. They are “banged” up and or either missing players due to injuries or the players are playing at a reduced capacity due to being hurt. They are older and slower than the Heat and it shows. The Celtics took three out of the four games against the Heat during the season. But given the Celtics medical issues, and age, they will be lucky to win two games in this series. (One if the refs continue to call it so tight.)

Or did Warren Sapp’s snitch remark cost him his job? Warren Sapp’s contract on ‘Inside the NFL’ is not being renewed by CBS and Showtime. Sapp who made the Pro Bowl seven times as a defensive lineman, recently tweeted that Jeremy Shockey of the Saints was the snitch in the Saints bounty mess. The league refuted the claim , stating Sapp had definitely crossed the line.
The networks claim that Sapp was not fired because of his comments. RIGHT, then why was he let go? I am pretty confident that the NFL commissioner Goddell placed a call to the networks and reminded them that NFL pays the bills. Sapp was politely shown the door. Sapp was slapped !!!!!!!!!!!
NFL teams continue to adjust and shape their rosters;

Or does Indiana take its High School basketball serious? Listed below are the largest/best high school gyms in the United States. Check out the number of gyms in Indiana…Hoosier Fever!!!!!!
No wonder the kids from Indiana can ball, they play in front of huge crowds their entire careers. They have seen it all and heard it all by the time they enter college. Larry Bird is from Indiana, need I say more?

Or is it just a coincidence that three of the four major titles in tennis are played around major American holidays? The French Open is played around the Memorial Day weekend; Wimbledon around the Fourth of July; The U.S. Open near Labor Day; and finally the Australian open in January (okay The Aussies won’t play along).
Are the networks taking advantage of Americans being home and who just might turn on the television to view a match? No way they would be that sneaky just to make a profit!!!! J

Or is it with deep regret we note the passing of boxing great Johnny Tapia? Tapia, the five-time boxing champion whose turbulent career was marked by cocaine addiction, alcohol, depression and run-ins with the law, was found dead Sunday at his Albuquerque home. He was 45.

Our prayers and thoughts are with the family.
