Or is the Miami Heat on fire? As of Tuesday they have won 23 straight games, capped off with a thriller in Boston against the Celtics, Monday night. LeBron, as usual, was superb, and had a hand in assisting, or scoring over 60 of the Heat’s points, including the dunk of the year over Jason Terry. Is there any doubt who the league’s MVP is?

The Heat is now chasing the 71-72 Laker’s consecutive game streak of 33, having already clinched their division. The record should keep them interested in the remainder of the regular season and send them into the playoffs feeling good about things. (The Lakers won the championship the year they set the consecutive wins record. A little ‘extra’ to shoot for.)
We can also talk about another team streaking right now. The Denver Nuggets won their 12th game in a row with a controversial finish over the Chicago Bulls, Monday night. Kosta Koufos got away with a basket interference, but Joakim Noah’s offensive goal tend was reviewed and called correctly. Why is everybody so confused about what happened? And should the NBA just accept human error and abolish the replay system?

Or is it déjà vu all over again? The NCAA has selected its teams for March Madness and surprisingly the top four seeds on the women’s side are the exact same as last year, i.e., Baylor, Notre Dame, Connecticut, and Stanford. Remarkable consistency, and it goes to show what can happen if your players stay for four years. Baylor is the favorite on the women’s side and is quite confident. When asked who might pose the biggest threat to their ability to repeat, Britteny Griner , the all-american center, stated , ‘the Miami Heat’.
On the men’s side, the top four are Louisville, Gonzaga, Indiana, and Kansas. The usual suspects , with the exception of Gonzaga. Gonzaga, is defined as a mid-major but has been competitive with the big boys for years. Maybe it is time to redefine mid-major and give some credit to the smaller programs for jobs well done.
In theory, and on paper, these top seeds should be your respective final four, but we don’t play the games on paper, we play them on ‘wood’. So anything can happen and usually does. Let the games begin. March Madness has arrived!!!!!!
You can follow this link to get additional info on each of the 68 men’s team:
The NIT (‘The Not Invited Tournament’) has made its selections. As usual they get the teams that didn’t get a call from the NCAA. This year they did get a surprise, Kentucky, a big time program and defending NCAA champion, didn’t make the ‘Big Dance’ and accepted an invite to the NIT. You’re only as good as your last win.

Many years ago the NIT was the tournament to play in. It was the more prestigious, and the rules allowed you to play in both . In 1950 CCNY won both tournaments and was the only school to do so. However, this was overshadowed the next year by a gambling scandal involving several City College players. This led to the downsizing of the program and damaged college basketball, in general.

Or are the NY Jets, NFL, really trying to rid themselves of Darrelle Revis? Revis, who is recovering from ACL surgery, has been the subject of trade talks lately. Darrelle is on the last year of a contract, and is considered the top corner back in the league. A top corner back is typically paid more than the wide receivers he plays against.

The Jets appear to be ready to let him go and remain a mediocre team. As a long time Jet fan, I am disgusted by their decision. They are not the least bit interested in becoming better.
Revis’ agent went to the NFL combine and was ignored by the Jets, a move that is sure to anger Revis and drive them further apart.
It has been a long time since the Jets have played in the Super Bowl, if they continue to drive out good players, it will be even longer.
Tom Brady, quarterback, New England Patriots met with the Patriots and restructured his deal giving the Patriots additional cap room, allowing them to sign and /or resign players. That is the way to run a team looking to get back to the Super Bowl.
The NFL is running its combine, where they workout players before the draft. Manti Te’o, Notre Dame linebacker, and fake girlfriend, was slower and smaller than thought. A sure way to drop in the draft.

Or is Kobe beginning to show his frustrations? Kobe received another technical foul Monday as the Lakers lost to the Nuggets. He is two away from a mandatory suspension.
The Lakers are currently out of the playoffs and are fighting to catch Houston for the last spot. However, they look old and slow and don’t appear to be able run D’Antoni’s offense and Coach seems to be able to coach one way only. What a mess in LA LA land. Maybe the Lakers can hire Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks. Cuban suggested the Lakers release Bryant. This so annoyed Bryant that he torched Dallas on national television and defeated the Mavericks.
Is Miami hot or what? LeBron is the MVP and the leagues best player, case closed-”This boy is on fire”!

Or should we kick into Black History month?
Black History Month originally began as Negro History Week in 1926 before eventually expanding into a full-month, February gives tribute to the accomplishments of prominent African-Americans 50 years later. In honor of this year’s celebration we have listed the top black MMA fighters.
1. Anderson Silva
2. Jon Jones
3. Quinton Jackson
4. Rashad Evans
5. Maurice Smith
6. Benson Henderson
7. Demetrious Johnson
8. Kevin Randleman
9. Jose Landi-Jons

Or has Indiana University broken the curse on being #1 in men’s college basketball? Indiana has managed to hold on to the spot for three consecutive weeks. Gonzaga, the school America roots for, has moved up to #2. Selection Sunday is approaching as we march into madness. (They were upset last night by Minnesota.)

Is it me…
Or is Michael Vick, quarterback, Philadelphia Eagles, loyal to a fault? The Eagles of the NFL and Michael Vick have agreed to a new one-year deal that will keep Vick with the Eagles next year. The Eagles gave Michael an opportunity to play after his release from prison(Animal Cruelty). Vick will have the opportunity to compete for the starting job and could earn ten million dollars. Vick could have sought his release and a multi-year deal elsewhere, but chose loyalty. Philadelphia really is the city of ‘brotherly’ love.

The big winner with Vick staying in Philly is the 49’ers. They now can seek to trade quarterback Alex Smith and have several additional takers. With Vick off the market Smith is a hot commodity and San Francisco stands to gain –supply and demand still works.
What was the NFL thinking when it decided to have a cold-weather Super Bowl? The possibility of it snowing during the week or day of the Big Game is a real possibility. What will they do…delay the game or play it earlier? If you are going to the game next year, you had better plan on being in the area early and ready to stay late. Mother nature is a mother!

Or is it the number? LeBron James, Miami Heat, is hot and on a roll. He is in a ‘zone’ and can do nothing wrong. James is scoring, rebounding and directing the offense for the Heat at an incredible level.
LeBron is wearing number 6. Having changed it when he signed with Miami. Bill Russell wore six and he won eleven championships with the Boston Celtics. Julius Erving, left the Nets, in a trade with Philadelphia, and he wore number 6. The Doctor, Julius Erving, wrecked havoc on the league and was a dominating force for years. He also performed “The Dunk” (sorry Michael Cooper).
Now James has brought the number back to life and is dominating the league. In his last five games he has shot an unheard of 71% from the field. He is being mentioned in the same breath as Jordan and Chamberlain. It’s gotta be the number.

Speaking of the Celtics, they lost for the first time since Rajon Rondo went down with a knee injury. The Celtics have been playing great ball of late, using several different players at point guard and everyone stepping up. There was even a Jason Terry sighting.
Note to Dwight Howard, L.A. Lakers: You’re a big boy; fight your own battle(s). Ask your Dad, respectfully, to stay out of your issues with Kobe.

Or will we have to learn to grapple with the fact that wrestling is gone? In a surprise recommendation, the IOC dropped wrestling from the Olympics Tuesday, beginning in 2020. According to a Reuters report, the decision was just a recommendation and the sport will have a chance to make it back onto the program when the committee meets in Buenos Aires in September. However, it is unlikely wrestling will be voted back in; a total of seven sports are fighting for one spot.
Other sports considered in the recommendation included taekwondo, modern pentathlon and field hockey.

Or did Indiana University finally break the number 1 jinx in college basketball? Yes I.U. was number 1 last week and in one poll they are number 1 again this week. So that means they were undefeated last week. NOT! They lost to Illinois during the week but were impressive over the weekend, beating Ohio State and were able to hold onto the top spot. Therefore the jinx is still alive and we look forward to an Indiana loss this week. The top five teams in Men’s basketball manage to lose last week/weekend…March Madness is going to be crazy. There is no clear-cut favorite and any one of ten teams has a shot at winning the tournament. You gotta love it.

Enjoy rivalry week. (The schools play their traditional rival this week.)
A note about the girls-Baylor University and Britney Griner (nice two hand dunk off the inbound play) enough said! Baylor U. #1.

Or is Joe Flacco, quarterback, Baltimore Ravens, an idiot? Instead of worrying about where they are playing NEXT years Super Bowl he should be concentrating on this year’s game. The one he is playing in. Flacco criticized the fact that next years Super Bowl will be played in NY in the cold (no dome). Joe you’re going to have enough to worry about versus the 49’ers this year. Worry about next year when and if you make it.

Our prediction for Super Bowl XLVII is the Baltimore Ravens over the San Francisco 49’ers (in spite of Flacco). The Ravens are on a roll and are playing inspired football. (They would love nothing better than to send their inspirational leader, Ray Lewis, linebacker, into retirement on a high note.) The pressure of the game may finally get to the 49’ers rookie quarterback, Colin Kaepernick. It is after all only the biggest game of the year and the biggest game of his short career.
Speaking of Ray Lewis, he has been accused of using a banned substance during his recent recovery period. Ray has denied the claim and points to his test results as proof of his innocence.
President Obama questioned whether or not he would let his son, if he had one, play football. What is there to question, football is a violent collision sport, where people are routinely injured, short and long term. Kudos to the President for speaking out and being honest.
I guess Randy Moss never heard of Jerry Rice, if he thinks he (Moss) is the best receiver of all times. Randy must have been hit in the head one too many times to think he’s as good as Jerry Rice. PLEASE!

Or do numbers lie? Rajon Rondo, point guard, Boston Celtics has torn the ACL in his knee and is finished for the season. (According to the smart money so are the Celtics.) But wait, recent stats show that the Celtics actually have a slightly better record playing without Rondo. It doesn’t make sense, unless Ray Allen was right when he left Boston quietly complaining about Rondo ‘hogging’ the ball. Could it be the Celtics are a better team without Rondo? Hmm.
I never saw anyone as happy as LeBron James to give away $75,000. A fan hit a half-court shot and won $75,000. James ran onto the floor and tackled the lucky winner in an emotional display of joy. It was very touching. LeBron, if you really want to be happy, you can give me $100,00 and I’ll make a lay up.

After recent Lakers games Kobe and Nash have been hanging around analyzing the game trying to determine what they (the team) need to do better. Guys, at your age you need to go home and rest. That’s what you need to do better!!!!!!!

Or is it TOO early to proclaim Tiger is back? Tiger Woods won the Farmers Insurance Open tournament at the Torrey Pines golf Club for his 75th win overall and his 8th win at Torrey Pines.
This is an example of a ‘horse for a course’ . Tiger ‘owns’ this course and does very well on it. He’s comfortable playing the Pines and it shows. Before we declare him back he needs to win a major tournament and be contending in others. Tiger still has a way to go.
Is it me…
Or is it sad that A-Rod has been linked to another incident of performance enhancing drugs? The Miami New Times, a popular alternative weekly, said in a story Tuesday that it had obtained files through an employee at a recently closed clinic in south Florida that show Rodriguez purchased HGH and other substances. A-Rod, the New York Yankees third baseman, who is recovering from hip surgery, has denied the report. Live by the needle …
Alex talk to Lance Armstrong before you deny too often and too loudly, it can come back to bite you on the butt.

Is it me…
Or is Indiana a lock to beat Michigan this weekend? Michigan is the number 1 team in college basketball. But as you know , if you have been following this column, the number 1 team has been upset the past four weekends.
Michigan plays the number 3 team Indiana, this weekend in Bloomington, Indiana. I smell upset city. Indiana is playing well and they are at home. Michigan is in big trouble. There’s a rumor that the fab five (Michigan) might attend the game. Unless they are suiting up, it won’t make a difference. There is the possibility that former pro basketball players, Tim Hardaway and Glen Robinson, will also be there cheering for Michigan. Their sons play for Michigan, but it’s not a father and son game. So the ‘juniors’ have to play Indiana without their dads.

Or have the games begun? The NBA playoffs have started and are off with a bang. The games are more intense and physical than during the regular season. Every possession is played liked it is the last possession of the game and everyone is trying hard and playing defense. It is as if the players really care about winning a game. What next, they’ll show some emotion?

Eastern Conference Playoffs
Philadelphia vs. Chicago Chicago leads series 1-0
New York vs. Miami Miami leads series 2-0; NY has lost 12 straight playoff games over the years
Boston vs. Atlanta Atlanta leads series 1-0
Orlando vs. Indiana Series is tied 1-1
Western Conference Playoffs
Utah vs. San Antonio San Antonio leads series 1-0; the old boys (San Antonio) are playing well
Dallas vs. Oklahoma City Oklahoma City leads series 2-0; OKC has been extremely physical and has gotten to Dallas
Denver vs. L.A. Lakers Lakers lead series 1-0 (Kobe believes the Lakers are contenders, not pretenders
L.A. Clippers vs. Memphis Clippers lead series 1-0 (great comeback, by Clippers to take game one
(The Tuesday night games are not listed because we went to press before the games were completed.)
Playoff Police Blotter:
R. Rondo, guard Boston Celtics, suspended one game for bumping official.
![]()
R. Artist (World Peace-NOT), forward L.A. Lakers suspended six games for vicious elbow assault on James Harden, Oklahoma City Thunder.
Playoff Emergency Room Report:
D. Rose, Chicago Bulls, torn ACL, out for the playoffs
.
I. Shumert, N.Y. Knicks , torn ACL out for the playoffs
R. Allen, Boston Celtics, Bone Spurs in Ankle, day to day
Amar’e Stoudemire, N.Y. Knicks, cut hand; day-to-day (lost a one round decision
with a glass enclosed fire extinguisher. Amar’e threw the first and only punch.)
Caron Butler. L.A. Clippers, fractured hand ,out six weeks.
Our MVP and Coach of the year are:
LeBron James, Miami Heat, MVP. He carried the Heat this season and was flawless throughout the season. His reluctance to take the last shot at the end of the game is the only criticism we have of him. When LeBron is hitting his jumper, he is the perfect ball player. He can post up, run the floor, pass the ball, plays lock down defense, and stays healthy.

Greg Popovich, San Antonio Spurs, Coach of the Year. ‘Pop’ did an outstanding job of shifting the focus of the Spurs from Tim Duncan to Tony Parker. He allowed Parker to become more aggressive and run the team on the floor, without hurting anyone’s feelings. Popovich managed the playing minutes of his aging players, during this condensed season perfectly. Popovich did a wonderful job , under less than ideal conditions and earned the number one seed in the west.

Too bad Michael Jordan can’t fire himself. He did a lousy job as the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. Pointing the finger at Paul Silas and firing him as coach was the cowards way out and a feeble attempt to shift the blame elsewhere. Silas, who is a good coach, didn’t have the horses to run with the big boys, and that is the owner’s fault, Mikey.

Or did ESPN broadcast the NFL draft? The NFL draft is a marathon that goes on forever, and ever, and ever. ESPN has analyst creating mock drafts that are discussed repeatedly, along with experts discussing the draft, players, and teams. Enough already, it is overkill. The results of the draft play out during the season. We won’t know until they play the game who did well in the draft and who didn’t.
On paper some teams seemed to have improved via the draft, but they don’t play the games on paper. Call me when your draftee has made the team and is contributing to your team’s success. See previous year’s draft to see how many can’t miss prospects MISSED!
You can review the 2012 NFL draft here:
Did the Washington Redskins give RG3 a vote of no confidence. Rg3 is suppose to be the man in Washington and they (Washington) elect to hedge their bet by drafting another quarterback. It is a business, first and foremost, as RG3 is learning.

Or do hockey fans not get it? Joel Ward, a carribean-canadian player for the Washington Caps, scored the series-winning goal in overtime against the Boston Bruins last week unleashing a multitude of racist tweets. (I would be curios to know how many of these racist Bruins’ fans are Boston Celtics’ fans and how they feel about Paul Pierce).
It’s a game people, no one died and life goes on.
These so-called fans hiding behind their computers are truly cowards and exemplify what’s wrong with fans. Unfortunately this is not the first time this season that a black player has been subject to racist taunts by NHL ‘fans’. Wayne Simmonds, of the Flyers had a banana thrown at him as he was taking a penalty shot . There are approximately 28 black players in the NHL out of 690 active players.
Is it me…
Or is it difficult keeping up with the Jones?
Jon Bones Jones, UFC light heavyweight champion, held a bit of a victory party. It has just been a couple of weeks since his big victory against rival Rashad Evans, but Jon Jones has another reason to celebrate. The New England Patriots drafted his little brother Chandler Jones in the first round 21st Overall.

Chandler was the first player from Syracuse to be drafted in the first round in over a decade. With this being the second brother of Jon Jones to go into the NFL, (Older brother, Arthur Jones plays defensive line for the Baltimore Ravens) and with Jon Jones being the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, is there any better current family of professional athletes?
Is it me…
Or is 47 a bit old to be boxing? Bernard Hopkins lost his light heavyweight title to Chad Dawson via a majority decision. Hopkins, who is 18 years older than Dawson, landed his best shots via head butts and opened a nasty cut on Dawson with his head. However, Dawson’s corner was able to control the bleeding and he controlled the fight throughout, winning 117-111 on two cards and 114-114 on the third (this judge must have dozed off during the fight. It was pretty boring.)

Hopkins at 47 has not announced his retirement, although his performance against Dawson spoke loudly for retirement, will go back to Philadelphia and weigh his options. His first option should be looking at collecting social security. You’re too old to keep boxing Bernard. Boxing is called ‘the toughest three minutes in sports’ because of what it takes to participate. Bernard you’re tough, but not as tough as boxing. At 47 years old you are asking to get hurt in the ring.
Speaking of retirement, is Floyd Mayweather so confident about his upcoming fight with Miguel Cotto, that he has already put the fight to rest? There has been very little publicity about the May 5th. fight and Floyd hasn’t really insulted Cotto or got under his skin. Floyd appears to be training and preparing for the fight, but he doesn’t seem worried about Miguel.

Cotto can fight, and could give Floyd some trouble. However, Mayweather should win and retire to the county jail to begin serving his sentence. Only in Las Vegas do they push back the date you are suppose to report to jail so you can have a fight and help fill the city coffers Money talks!
