Or does the number make the player? Years ago you would see a basketball team for the first time and you would usually be able to select the best payer by who wore number 23 (a Jordan wannabee). Now it is much more difficult to select the best player on the opposition because players are choosing different numbers for different reasons.
Players still wear the number of their favorite player, but that player is not always the best player, it could be someone whose ‘game’ they like, a relative, a friend, a mentor, etc. There are many other reasons for selecting a number. The equipment manager assigns you the number, and you have no choice. You can choose your birthday, or some other special date. A lucky number, one that makes you feel good when you wear it.
Regardless of the reason, your number is your number and you feel good when you have it on. Players have been known to buy a number from a teammate. (Ricky Henderson, baseball, would only wear 24. If that number were taken he would offer his teammate a new suit for the number. Other players would offer cash for ‘their’ number.)
Whatever your number is, you feel better wearing it; and that can affect your performance. Athletes are creatures of habit and wearing “your” number is part of the routine and it boosts performance.
